Yves makes her solo return with second Ep I Did and title song Viola.

Yves is one of my favourite LOONA members and I’ve really enjoyed her 1st EP back in May with LOOP growing like crazy on me over time – I liked it initially but I kept going back to it over and over again. I think YVES has a very unique and interesting stylistic approach and her solo music definitely stands out from the other music we have on this year’s k-pop scene. From the production of her music to the music videos, it’s apparent that Yves is not afraid of experimenting and bringing the sound she likes to life. I’m very excited to listen to Viola today and see what Yves decided to continue with next – let’s dive deeper into her second EP and review her newest release.

We are in for yet another visual treat from Yves and her creative team because I’m obsessed with the styling and the overall atmosphere she creates in this music video. Viola is very catchy, with a futuristic kind of instrumental that really does a great job of keeping the energy of the song going until the very end. I know she is under MILLIC’s label but Viola specifically has such a distinctive sound I’d expect to hear from the k-r&b scene and maybe that’s why I’m really feeling like the track brings both something new and something slightly nostalgic to the table. The second verse especially brings that underground feeling to me, but the true star of the show for me has to be the melodic, dreamy pre-chorus. However, this isn’t to say that the chorus isn’t good – it’s catchy, and even though it’s repetitive, I feel like it works well, especially when paired up with the music video. Yves is definitely on her way to establishing her own distinctive style and sound and I couldn’t be happier for her – seeing artists make music they genuinely personally enjoy is the best feeling ever.

The new EP offers some great hidden gems as well. I like the gentle, emotional feeling Gone Girl brings (Yves really gets to showcase her vocals here), as well as DIM which has such fantastic vocal moments. However, my favourite out of the new songs has to be Hashtag. The instrumental? The intro caught me off guard because it just sounded so good. I absolutely love the r&b feeling this song offers and Yves sounds fantastic. The second verse paired up with the pre-chorus has to be one of the best sections I’ve heard this week. So catchy, but without being too much in your face. Definitely check this track out!

Yves is definitely on her way to become the master of her art and I’m glad to see it happening in real time.
