Oh my god why is it taking me 600 years to write reviews these days but it seems like WFH day is the day I am most productive and feel like writing reviews. This is actually the last one I had to write though so yay I am caught up until I eventually finish Family by Choice or The Judge from Hell. Anyway, I don’t think you can not have heard about Love Next Door when you are on the internet especially the Korean influenced side of it. I first didn’t want to start the drama and wait for it to full be out but I gave in in the end and once I started I was anxiously waiting for more every week. With that said let’s get into the review!
Summary via MDL: Choi Seung Hyo is the most noteworthy young architect in Korea, and he runs the architecture firm “Atelier In.” Not only is he nearly perfect as an architect, but he is also very attractive and has a great personality. Yet, Choi Seung Hyo has experienced moments that he wants to erase from his life. Those moments usually involve Bae Seok Ryu. When they were 4 years old, their moms became friends. Because of their moms, Choi Seung Hyo and Bae Seok Ryu spent a lot of time together, bathing together at a women’s bathhouse. Now, Choi Seung Hyo meets Bae Seok Ryu as an adult. While growing up, Bae Seok Ryu’s life was smooth sailing. During her school days, she never missed ranking first academically at her school. She was always passionate and energetic in the things she did. After graduating from university, she was hired by a large company. She worked hard as a project manager, but for some reason, she quit her job. She has been unemployed since then. She meets Choi Seung Hyo.
Love Next Door was at one point my life line of getting through the week I really looked forward to every single Saturday or Sunday when I could finally sit down and watch the latest update and right after scroll Twitter to see what other people thought. Now there was this one point in the story people just started theory crafting some really out of the box things and being upset about a scenario that hadn’t happened yet? People really were dramatic about Love Next Door and honestly I get it but can we calm down and let professional writers do their thing? And K-Dramas have never followed just one straight line of a genre there is always a mix to be found. I think that’s what K-Dramas makes essentially that? Anyway, as you can tell I really enjoyed Love Next Door and the emotional ride it took me on.
Haein and Somin undeniably had amazing chemsitry and the drama was just as good because of it. Of course the writers did a fantastic job of bringing us the classic childhood friends to lovers trope but Haein and Somin made this a feast to witness. I will admit that as per usual I was a bit bored with the main couple by the time they had finally confessed to each other and Love Next Door was here to answer the rest of my questions because… hello those side characters? The families? The siblings? The best friend? All those sub plots were amazing and had me sat! I was so involved in Seunghyo’s and Seungryu’s parents stories and we also got an insane amount of rep in this show. Even a gay character! yay! But yes while watching our two love birds connect and healing together and making their relationship work after being best friends for such a long time was exciting and wholesome it was the side characters that kept me tuning in every week.
Honestly, Love Next Door probably tackles every trope out there but it makes it fun in a really good way. I had an amazing time watching this and shading some tears for the characters and laughing with them. Love Next Door is definitely worth the hype and enjoyable. In the end it is a very typical rom-com friends to lovers drama but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. You get what you expect and that’s perfectly fine! So if you need a drama like this definitely give it a go!
