Family By Choice (2024) - Episode 8 Review & Recap

Episode 8 of Family By Choice truly redeemed the slower pacing of Episode 7, revealing that the repetitive family struggles were, in fact, essential groundwork for the dramatic shifts that unfold. The family’s separation feels inevitable, a heartbreaking result of circumstances beyond their control.

San Ha faces an emotional decision when his mother is injured in an accident and requires rehabilitation to walk again. Encouraged by his uncle, who suggests that studying in Seoul could allow him to support his mother’s recovery, San Ha is torn between his chosen family and his responsibilities. The idea of attending college in Seoul as a way to oversee his mother’s progress feels both practical and painful, adding depth to his character’s journey.

Meanwhile, Hae Jun is confronted with a similar dilemma. Joo Won’s father, who has taken care of him, works late nights to save money for Hae Jun’s potential education in the United States, wanting to give him an option beyond relying on his biological father. However, the financial strain proves too much, and Joo Won’s father collapses from exhaustion. Seeing his guardian’s sacrifice, Hae Jun realizes the toll his presence is taking and decides to pursue his studies in the U.S. after graduation through his biological father, hoping to relieve Joo Won’s father of the financial burden.

Both San Ha and Hae Jun are reluctant to leave, but the circumstances make it almost unavoidable. The emotional buildup between Episodes 7 and 8 pays off beautifully, making their choices feel genuine and valid. The previews hint at an emotional time skip, suggesting this separation will bring growth and may even lead to new dynamics in the boys' relationships with Joo Won, including the possibility of romantic developments for San Ha or Hae Jun.

The episode ends on a bittersweet note as Joo Won overhears San Ha and Hae Jun arguing over their impending departures. San Ha urges Hae Jun to stay if he’s the one leaving, knowing that their absence will hurt Joo Won and her father most of all. Episode 2 had shown how deeply Joo Won yearned for them to become a true family, and this imminent separation threatens to shatter that dream. Watching Joo Won’s quiet heartbreak as she realizes the family she hoped for is slipping away adds a poignant layer to the story. It’s impossible not to feel for her, and I’m eager to see how she’ll find the strength to cope with these changes in the episodes to come.
