The emotional intensity of Family By Choice returns in its 10th episode, and once again, it made me cry as Hae Jun’s struggles and burdens were revealed. It was a moment of reflection, filled with regrets and "what ifs."
As the story progresses, San Ha and Hae Jun try to reconcile with Joo Won after their return. Although Joo Won keeps her distance, she knows deep down that she misses them. She reluctantly joins them for a family meal on her birthday, despite saying she didn’t want to. Though she acts cold, her presence brings a sense of warmth and relief to Hae Jun and San Ha.
After the meal, Joo Won asks Hae Jun why he didn't stay in touch during his fifth year in the US. At this point, San Ha reveals that Hae Jun suffered a severe foot injury, forcing him to quit basketball. The US doctor told him he might never walk again, and it was San Ha who supported him through recovery. This revelation sheds light on Hae Jun’s disconnection. While it doesn't justify his absence, it makes his actions more understandable. This moment truly touched my heart and brought tears to my eyes.
Meanwhile, San Ha still hasn't explained why he didn’t return home, even though he was in Seoul. Flashbacks of his mother stopping him hint that she might be the main reason. However, what exactly his mother did to prevent San Ha from going home should be fully revealed to add more depth to this part of the story.
The episode ends with San Ha confessing his feelings for Joo Won. This confession could disrupt the story. I love their bond as a family, but I find it hard to imagine them together romantically. They’ve acted as family, and even though a ten-year gap might justify a relationship, it still feels like a stretch for me.
So far, the series is going well. Let’s see how this development affects their relationship moving forward.
