aespa return with new mini album Whiplash and title song of the same name.

Oh, you bet I have been waiting for this one. I have to admit I have been listening to Winter’s solo song so many times I have lost count. And those solo songs had me more than ready for what aespa would have in store for us when it comes to this new comeback. The concept photos for this comeback had me more than seated, the quality? the looks? aespa are one of the most exciting currently active girl groups. So let me stop gushing over the girls and how amazed I am at their evolvement since Black Mamba and let’s get into the review of Whiplash.

Hello are we seeing the beautiful length of Whiplash? Over three minutes? From a girl group out of this K-pop generation? Sign me up! Well, the over three minutes of Whiplash honestly work in its favor. Whiplash is a great song and I can’t stop listening to it. This is a song straight for the dance floor at least for me. The house beats are there and the vocals as well and the hook works and is catchy. Whiplash has everything it takes for it to be a good song but what makes it great is how well it is delivered and performed. I can’t really describe why this song works so well for me but it is not trying to be more than it is and that’s a club banger and since my living room is my private club I will take a banger like this. It didn’t hurt that the girls also looked absolutely amazing either.

"I honestly thought the solo songs would be part of this comeback but then I realized it was a special digital single. I already said Winter’s Spark is the song for me. That doesn’t mean I wasn’t excited for us to see a total of 5 b-sides on this mini and more group music. With Whiplash setting the bar quite high I was more than ready for more. However first b-side Kill it has a part in its chorus that is a bit too obnoxious for me to full love it sadly. Flights, Not Feelings is a mood with that title, I’d also rather catch flights than feelings but sometimes it is what it is, the hip hop elements of it are interesting. Pink Hoodie also has its nice and catchy moments but the song that I like the most from the album has to be Just Another Girl I love the pop-rock undertones in this one and the girls sound fantastic. Flowers is also a great song and absolutely stunning.

aespa’s 2024 music has been some of their best to date, including their solos. Karina’s Up has been a constant on my playlist this past month and I’m so happy that the general public loves the song too. Whiplash has a lot to top – both Supernova and Armageddon were more than fantastic, and definitely the type of music aespa does perfectly. The girls are definitely confirming that they are that group of their generation and that no one quite does this style of music like them. I’m excited to dive into Whiplash and the new b-sides so let’s review and see what aespa brought us today. I know we are in for a musical and visual treat for sure.

Whiplash is definitely continuing aespa’s recognizable style of music and their unique concept, especially visually. It’s interesting how the music video is seemingly simple, with a dominant white background for a large section of the video, and the styling is very discreet and oriented towards black as its main colour. However, it’s exactly this kind of minimalistic yet futuristic style that aespa do the best and it’s what makes Whiplash stand out even more. Whiplash is a rather solid song, offering us enough melody and vocal moments to really keep us going, but also providing us with that vogue-like club music that makes you want to make your room your runway. The main hook is catchy and I hope it will age well since it’s repetitive – it definitely has the potential to be a new classic considering it’s very addictive from start to finish. Another thing aespa excel at is their incredible modeling in both their concept photos and their music videos, and Whiplash definitely takes the crown for this. It’s just so enjoyable and powerful to see them deliver such unique energy. They look and sound amazing.
