Sweet Home 3 Was Definitely An Attempt At Saving The Show

A long run of three season of a show that should have ended after its first comes to an end with a chaotic mess in Sweet Home 3.

Yup, that was as bad as I thought it would be or maybe even worse? I am not sure. I know I am finally back at slowly watching some K-Dramas currently watching actively two weekly ones Love Next Door and Romance In The House (hello Choi Minho would have me watching a show about trashcans if he was on it) and decided to fill the weekly wait void with the final season of Sweet Home. Boy was that a choice to watch in between love dramas. Well it is finally done and I will bring you a review for this drama.

Summary via MDL: The never-ending monsterization crisis. Hyeon Su, consumed by monsters, tries to regain his human self. Nam Sang Won, who entered Pyeon Sang Uk’s body, visits the survivors’ stadium with a group of people to achieve his goal. And unlike the previous rules, they put forward an unconventional condition to provide convenience to those with symptoms. Stadiums are no longer safe spaces, and people are confused. Meanwhile, Eun Hyeok, who was reborn from the cocoon, appears in a new form… Season 3, which will mark the finale of the desperate struggle of those who are faced with a choice between the border between monsters and humans.

I had 3 expectations for this drama, finally give us answers to all the questions, stop killing off legacy characters and wrap it up in a semi well way. I had given up on a good ending Season 2 ruined way too much of what made Sweet Home great so a satisfying ending was very much out of the picture for me. I just wanted it to be tied up neatly and they kind of? did that? I am not entirely sure how I feel about the ending. What I can say with confidence is that Sweet Home 3 was definitely an improvement to Season 2, which let’s be real is not even that hard to do because the bar is in hell. However, the writing made a bit more sense and I felt like I could actually follow the plot. I was also weirdly emotionally involved in Yisu and what would happen to her. They made us really get involved in that weird monster kids journey huh.

Another good part about Sweet Home 3 is bringing back some old characters especially Eunhyeok since his return was teased at the end of season 2. Dohyun is just a fantastic actor and so much fun to watch, even if they completely changed his character and made him despiteful really I was forgiving him a bit too much. Sweet Home 3 sadly continued to kill off legacy characters and push the damn soldiers in my face. I did not care for those guys during season 2 why would I care now? Yes some of them turned out to be likable but come on give me more of the cast I was stuck in a house with. Yeah this drama really struggled with prioritizing which characters were important I sometimes saw new scenes with new people and sat there? Who are you? Why are we here again? Why do I not care? I was interested in seeing that odd family reunion Hyunsu rediscovering his human side and the main trio also meeting up but we barely got any of that. Sweet Home 3 was all over the place, especially during the first couple of episodes. The focus shifts to what is important once that’s established towards the final. One thing I am honestly confused about is Songwook’s body coming back looking unharmed? Didn’t he lose an eye? Wasn’t he impaled? How? Anyway king saved the day and is probably one of the best characters in the show.

So yeah what about those questions we had? Did they answer them? Maybe during season 2 when I was barely paying attention we kinda know where this weird virus comes from and that it’s some part of new human evolution but I still don’t understand it at all. What are these Neo humans? How are they different from the monster humans? How does it work? I am so? Maybe Sweet Home 3 never aimed to answer those questions. It is just confusion because the world is a bit hard for me to understand. But honestly the rest is simply it’s just about circumstances changing and humanity trying to prevail. And they surprisingly did. The end makes it seem like there is a new world order and everyone kind of gets along. We have Hyunsu who basically knows how to I think turn monster back into humans? At least that’s how I understood it but honestly, everything is just very vague and it’s aiming for you to feel something I presume. I mean kind of successful I was definitely back to paying attention.

I won’t comment on the CGI it was just as bad and I guess they are trying their best, those arm tentacle things look so gross though holy. Overall, Sweet Home 3 was okay, it definitely doesn’t prove why we went beyond the original story of season 1 but it salvages a lot that season 2 did wrong. Song Kang is never a sore sight to see, Go Minsi did fantastic as the leading woman and only original legacy woman to also live on, wooo! And Dohyun is hot, simple facts. Not sure how I feel about the end but I guess it was a happy one? It’s just a new world now for them I suppose and that’s okay. They did the best with this weird script that they all could and I feel content with how it ended and I am so glad this is finally over!
