TREASURE Are Back With King Kong

Treasure return with digital song King Kong.

I’ve really enjoyed TREASURE’s last few title tracks and I feel like it’s so nice to have that recognizable YGE boy group sound back on the scene – especially since the group has been combining melodic and rap-led sections successfully these past few comebacks. THE SECOND STOP: CHAPTER TWO still remains one of my favourite new boy group albums in general and I love the songs from that one still. I’m very interested to see what TREASURE have prepared for us today because I feel like despite the name of the new song, King Kong is going to be great melodic fun! Let’s review.

King Kong is a sound and style I haven’t even realized I’ve been missing so much – it’s a combination of that YGE bad-ass atmosphere with a catchy and strong hook and melody that glues the song together. TREASURE really suits this style and I feel like they really make you believe in what they’re saying. Maybe it’s because the current k-pop trend is so soft and summery that King Kong comes as something a bit different and even refreshing in a good way. I love angst as long it’s done well and I think TREASURE absolutely delivered a quality hype banger with King Kong. It’s needless to say that I love the vocal moments of the song as they’re always the strongest ones for me but I feel like the rap sections and even the sudden pop-rock instrumental break are connected well together. I’m even loving the recognizable TREASURE outro with loads of energy. I’m also positively surprised by the amount of melody in the chorus – it’s so good having hype songs with actual choruses and no anti-drops because the energy just comes across as much stronger than usual. King Kong is honestly a surprisingly welcomed release for me – it will be on repeat. Old-school YGE style with TREASURE’s charm seems like a winning combination all in all. The music video is fun as well although quite dark in its tone and colour.

Wish this wasn’t just a digital single but I’ll take it – it’s definitely one of my favourites of the year even just on the first few listens. I’m filled with energy!
